Finally a science channel I love is discussing the show, I've always heard about the book but never got to reading it so when the show came out I was blown away by the creative ideas and scenarios that were present in the story and it's awesome seeing your channel discussing it. The fact that it's a syzygy shouldn't matter either, it's just the distance between the planet and the center of mass of the star system that matters. So these forces would be applied constantly, not once in a celestial blue moon.

The white dwarfs could have caught each other in their gravity wells after becoming white dwarfs, so the red giant phase would not be an issue. And given enough time they could cool down enough to not be deadly to life on the planet. This wouldn't work in the context of the show, because cooling down to that temperature would take much longer than the current age of the universe, but it is within the realm of possibility in the far future. The much bigger problem is that such a system would not be stable for long enough for life to evolve on such a planet, and it may not even be possible at all when all the radiation from those white dwarfs is infrared.

If someone right above the event horizon was trying to put a really long rod past it, wouldn't the observer pushing the rod down see the rod compress in the direction of the event horizon? Think about it, if time pretty much stops flowing at the event horizon then for the outside observer it would look like the tip just stops descending and quickly redshifts, but since time has physically stopped at the event horizon they won't ever see or feel it cross and it will have an effect like the object is compressing. Similar to how objects compress when moving at the speed of light.

I kept noticing things like that in the story but yeah, it's fun storytelling. =)

A three-body white dwarf system could physically occur if they were foreign stars, no? Three red giants become white dwarves in disparate systems. Two of them are then displaced from their systems (or vice versa I guess) by some passing of a heavy object like a black hole or your mum, and are later captures by the gravitational pull of the remaining one.

So something i have a problem with understanding are micro-novas, where white dwarfs accumulate enough hydrogen on its surface to trigger a critical fusion event in its atmosphere. I would love to see a topic of that and what is actually going on. Also i absolutely love your video on core collapse supernovas!

Umm.. does the outward centrifugal force not count as well? A planet orbiting a star is in equilibrium because gravity is balanced by centrifugal force, isn’t it? that’s already significant

I just dont get how a life bearing planet could form in a 3 body star system in the first place. Earth took billions of years of stability in the goldilocks zone to produce humans. That's the wildly unrealistic part

I really love that that the tone of this video is not the usual "media and authors are idiots and don't understand physics" but much rather "hey thats an interesting idea and even if its bonkers lets actually work it through and see what happens."
